Katie & Maria: Fighting the Invisible
Walk with us! We are raising awareness and money for AARDA, Autoimmune Related Diseases Association. For those of you who know us, I am 25 years old and suffer from Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD) and Maria is 28 years old and suffers from Myositis. We are first cousins and both conditions are 2 out of the 80 types of Autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune diseases often run in families, and 75 percent of those affected are women, according to AARDA.
What is an Autoimmune disease?
Autoimmune disease affects up to 50 million Americans, according to the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA). An autoimmune disease develops when your immune system, which defends your body against disease, decides your healthy cells are foreign. As a result, your immune system attacks healthy cells. Depending on the type, an autoimmune disease can affect one or many different types of body tissue. Autoimmune diseases usually fluctuate between periods of remission (little or no symptoms) and flare-ups (worsening symptoms). Currently, treatment for autoimmune diseases focuses on relieving symptoms because there is no curative therapy.
Join our team and come walk with us on Sunday September 10th in Hudson River Park in Manhattan to bring awareness to all invisible Autoimmune diseases. If you can't join us, please donate whatever you can to our team, every bit helps to find a cure!
