Pilates guru Kelly Tourgeman opened TPB’s doors 15 years ago, quickly becoming a success in the local Glendale community. She leads a fierce team of instructors, who hold multiple educational degrees and fitness certificates, and boast careers not only in Pilates, but dance, film, music, medicine, and fashion to name a few. But just three years ago, Kelly’s world was turned upside down when she was unexpectedly diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis: a disease in which the immune system eats away at the protective covering of nerves.
“I was ready to throw in the towel and close the studio doors. But the love and support of my Pilates Body family (team members and clientele) made me realize I can do this! I can persevere,” said Kelly. “Exercise is my drug of choice - I will not quit!” At TPB, Kelly is not alone in her challenges - many other instructors and clients struggle with AI diseases, and have found the Pilates method and the TPB community to be a saving grace.
TPB Barre instructor Tracy Ramsay was diagnosed with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis two years ago - another chronic autoimmune disease that affects the whole body. “I've been able to use my job as a Pilates instructor to not only manage my own pain, but to inspire and encourage clients going through the same challenges,” said Tracy. “Pilates offers a chance for anyone, especially those struggling with chronic pain, to take control of their fitness and retrain their bodies in a safe and effective manner.” Originally developed by Joseph Pilates nearly a century ago, this exercise method focuses on strengthening and toning muscles (with a heavy emphasis on core), increasing flexibility and physical symmetry, and improving coordination and balance.
Owner Kelly is moved by the amount of clients who have come forward with their own stories of how Pilates has allowed them to feel in control of their bodies again. “It is my hope that by participating in this walk and cause that not only cures will be found, but also quicker means to diagnose and begin proactive treatment.”
